Today, we are going to discuss the most important short questions from Unit 1 of B.Sc Botany Semester 1 MJC-1 Phycology and Microbiology.
These questions are very important for the examination because similar questions have already been asked in previous B.Sc Botany Semester 1 examinations, and some of these questions are being repeated.
If you prepare these important questions properly, they can help you score good marks in your Semester 1 Botany examination.
How Many Marks Is the MJC-1 Theory Paper?
First, let us understand the marks pattern of the B.Sc Botany MJC-1 Theory Paper.
The total marks of the MJC-1 Theory Paper are 100 marks.
30 marks are for the CIA (Continuous Internal Assessment) examination.
70 marks are for the End Semester examination.
The CIA examination is conducted by the college.
Students appear for the 70-mark End Semester Theory Examination.
Therefore, students should understand the question pattern of the 70-mark examination properly.
How Many Short Questions Are Asked in the 70-Marks Exam?
In the End Semester examination, 6 short questions are asked.
Out of these 6 questions, students have to answer any 4 questions.
Each short question carries 5 marks.
Therefore:
1 short question = 5 marks
4 short questions × 5 marks = 20 marks
So, students can score 20 marks from the short-question section by answering 4 questions correctly.
MJC-1 Phycology and Microbiology Syllabus
Before preparing the questions, students should also know the syllabus of MJC-1.

Unit 1: Classification of Plant Kingdom and Important Features
The name of Unit 1 is:
Classification of Plant Kingdom and Their Important Features (Whittaker, 1969)
Students should study the important topics included in this unit carefully because questions can be asked from these topics in the examination.
Important 7 Short Questions from Unit 1
Today, we are providing 7 important short questions from Unit 1 of MJC-1 Phycology and Microbiology.
These questions have been selected because similar questions have been asked in previous B.Sc Botany Semester 1 examinations and they are important from the examination point of view.
If you prepare all these 7 questions properly, you will have a better chance of attempting the short-question section in the examination.
I will explain how to write answers systematically by providing solutions to a few questions, so that you can secure good marks.
The important short questions are given below:
Question 1
What is Whittaker's five kingdom classification ? Explain its main features.
Answer:
Introduction
R. H. Whittaker proposed the Five Kingdom Classification in 1969. He divided living organisms into five kingdoms on the basis of their cell structure, body organization, mode of nutrition, reproduction and evolutionary relationships.
The five kingdoms are:
Monera
Protista
Fungi
Plantae
Animalia
Five Kingdom Classification
Main Features
1. Kingdom Monera
Monera includes simple prokaryotic organisms. They do not have a true nucleus. They are generally unicellular. Bacteria and cyanobacteria are included in this kingdom.
Example: Bacteria, Nostoc
2. Kingdom Protista
Protista mainly includes unicellular eukaryotic organisms. Their cells have a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Many protists live in water.
Example: Amoeba, Euglena
3. Kingdom Fungi
Fungi are eukaryotic organisms. They do not contain chlorophyll and therefore cannot prepare their own food by photosynthesis. They generally obtain food by absorption.
Example: Yeast, Rhizopus, Agaricus
4. Kingdom Plantae
Plantae includes multicellular, eukaryotic and mainly photosynthetic organisms. They contain chlorophyll and prepare their own food.
Example: Mosses, ferns and flowering plants.
5. Kingdom Animalia
Animalia includes multicellular eukaryotic organisms. Animals do not have chlorophyll and obtain food from other organisms. Their cells do not have a cell wall.
Example: Earthworm, fish, human beings.
Main Criteria Used by Whittaker
Whittaker mainly considered the following points:
Cell type – prokaryotic or eukaryotic
Cell type – prokaryotic or eukaryotic
Cell organization – unicellular or multicellular
Mode of nutrition – autotrophic or heterotrophic
Reproduction
Body organization
Evolutionary relationships
Conclusion
Whittaker's Five Kingdom Classification provided a simple and useful way to study the diversity of living organisms. It separated organisms according to important differences in their cell structure, organization and mode of nutrition. It became an important system in the study of biological classification.
Question 2
Who proposed the five kingdom classification and in which year?
Question 3
Name the five kingdoms proposed by R.H Whittaker .
Question 4
What are the main criteria used by R.H Whittaker for classifying organisms ?
Question 5
Discuss the significant contribution of F.E Fristsch and G.M smith to the study of algae.
Question 6
Describe the structure and life history of Nostoc with suitable diagram.
Question 7
Describe the structure and life history of Oedogonium with suitable diagram.
You should write your answers for the B.Sc. Botany Semester 1 exam following the exact same pattern l used for Question 1.
Only then will you secure the full 5 marks for the short questions. Make sure to include flowcharts and diagrams in your answers, as these are a major strength in Botany.
When a professor evaluates your paper, they should get the impression that you are a brilliant student.
Here, I have provided short questions covering Units 1 through 7 of Phycology and Microbiology.
you can be certain that one or two of these questions will appear in your B.Sc. Semester 1 exam .
